Burns’ 250th Birthday

Posted by berkeleyscot on January 25, 2009

The late Andy Stewart sings Birthday greetings on YouTube.

And this is to share with everyone, in light of our new administration:

“A Man’s a Man …”

Is there for honest Poverty
That hings his head, an’ a’ that;
The coward slave-we pass him by,
We dare be poor for a’ that!
For a’ that, an’ a’ that,
Our toils obscure an’ a’ that,
The rank is but the guinea’s stamp,
The Man’s the gowd for a’ that.

What though on hamely fare we dine,
Wear hoddin grey, an’ a that;
Gie fools their silks, and knaves their wine;
A Man’s a Man for a’ that:
For a’ that, and a’ that,
Their tinsel show, an’ a’ that;
The honest man, tho’ e’er sae poor,
Is king o’ men for a’ that.

Ye see yon birkie, ca’d a lord,
Wha struts, an’ stares, an’ a’ that;
Tho’ hundreds worship at his word,
He’s but a cuif for a’ that:
For a’ that, an’ a’ that,
His ribband, star, an’ a’ that:
The man o’ independent mind
He looks an’ laughs at a’ that.

A prince can mak a belted knight,
A marquis, duke, an’ a’ that;
But an honest man’s aboon his might,
Gude faith, he maunna fa’ that!
For a’ that, an’ a’ that,
Their dignities an’ a’ that;
The pith o’ sense, an’ pride o’ worth,
Are higher rank than a’ that.

Then let us pray that come it may,
(As come it will for a’ that,)
That Sense and Worth, o’er a’ the earth,
Shall bear the gree, an’ a’ that.
For a’ that, an’ a’ that,
It’s coming yet for a’ that,
That Man to Man, the world o’er,
Shall brothers be for a’ that.

  1. Fascinating – we think as one – read what I posted on my own blog just ten minutes before reading yours …

  2. Thank you for the comment and the sentiment, Richard.

    The finest rendition I have ever heard of a “Man’s a Man” is by Sheena Wellington. She sang it at the reconvened Scottish Parliament in 1999.

  3. I also like this one!

  4. I omitted to say this is by Paolo Nutini

    Ae fond kiss takes some beating.

    Scotland has many venues booked for homecoming between the 250th anniversary of Burns birth (25 Jan) and St Andrews Day (30 Nov), when homecoming officially ends.

    Scotland has a rich heritage of records for people to check and, in my view, is certainly a resource that is much undervalued. You will find some insight into the year of homecoming on my own site; hope you like some of the Scottish music on offer although any videos displayed is between the provider and YouTube. Any infringements (such as commercial violations), which do occur from time to time, is between those two parties.

    Best wishes,

  6. good blog

    keep it up
